A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), John Odigie-Oyegun, has disclosed that leaders of the party in the South-South geopolitical zone have unanimously agreed to support Rotimi Amaechi for the party’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Odigie-Oyegun made the announcement on Friday while addressing journalists, as political activities gradually intensify in preparation for the next election cycle.
According to him, Amaechi, a former Minister of Transportation, formally met with ADC leaders from the South-South region to notify them of his intention to contest the presidency on the party’s platform in 2027.
Speaking on the outcome of the meeting, Odigie-Oyegun expressed satisfaction with Amaechi’s approach, describing it as respectful and in line with established political traditions within the zone.
“We are glad that our son, His Excellency, Rotimi Amaechi, took advantage of this meeting to brief us formally of his intention to run for the presidency of our great nation,” he said.
He added that the leaders appreciated Amaechi for consulting widely within his home region before fully launching his ambition.

“We were very pleased. We thanked him for the respect he has for the leaders of the zone for not letting loose in this zone, for setting up his own personal structures, for ensuring like every good son that he tells his people what he has in mind before he embarks on it,” Odigie-Oyegun stated.
The former governor further revealed that the meeting ended with a unanimous resolution to back Amaechi’s presidential aspiration, pledging the zone’s full support for his bid.
“We are pleased and I can report that a unanimous decision was taken to give him all the support that he needs in pursuit of his ambition,” he said.
Beyond endorsing Amaechi, Odigie-Oyegun noted that South-South ADC leaders had resolved to institutionalise regular consultations among themselves to strengthen unity and strategic coordination within the region.
“Lastly, we are going to meet regularly. This group of leaders are going to meet regularly to learn from each other’s experience so that, as usual, the South-South zone will become an example to be emulated by other zones in the nation,” he added.
The development signals early positioning within the ADC as parties begin internal consultations and alliance-building ahead of the 2027 presidential race.
