Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has responded to growing speculation about the possibility of him emerging as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate in the 2027 general election, stressing that leadership and nation-building have never been the preserve of perfect individuals.

Dogara made the remarks on Sunday while speaking on Politics Today, a current affairs programme aired on Channels Television, where he was asked to comment on discussions linking him to a potential vice-presidential slot ahead of the next general elections.

Reacting to the speculation, the former Speaker said he does not consider himself a flawless individual, despite his years of political experience, but noted that he possesses what he described as a “rich pedigree” gained through years of public service.

According to him, history has shown that societies and civilizations were built and sustained by ordinary people who were willing to serve, rather than by individuals claiming perfection.

Dogara said all his personal and political achievements were by the grace of God, adding that he remains constantly aware of his limitations and imperfections.

“I don’t think leadership and nation-building depend on perfect individuals,” he said. “If you look at history, you will find that civilizations were built and sustained by ordinary people.”

Reflecting on his time as Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dogara noted that the position exposed him to critical aspects of governance and national leadership.

He recalled that as Speaker, he ranked as the fourth-highest public office holder in the country, a role that came with immense responsibility and access to sensitive national issues.

The former Speaker said the experience afforded him insights and knowledge that many people outside the corridors of power may never encounter, but stressed that such exposure does not make anyone infallible.

“Well, honestly speaking, I don’t know why I’m being asked these questions,” Dogara said during the interview. “But let me say something: I don’t think I’m ever prepared for anything. What I know is that everything I am is by the grace of God.”

He added: “I will look at myself as totally unprepared, though I have some rich pedigree. I’ve served as the Speaker of the House of Representatives, having been number four in this country of about 200 million people.

There are certain things I know that a lot of people don’t know, I can assure you of that. But all I know is that I’m not perfect.”

Dogara’s comments come amid increasing political permutations and early maneuverings ahead of the 2027 general election, with analysts closely watching statements and movements by key political figures across party lines.
