Former Governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending a long association with the opposition party amid deepening internal turmoil.
Suswam’s resignation was conveyed in a letter dated February 4, addressed to the Chairman of the Mbagber Council Ward in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.
In the letter, the former governor attributed his decision to what he described as the persistent and unresolved internal crises that have continued to undermine the stability and cohesion of the party.
According to him, the inability of the PDP to address its long-standing leadership and structural challenges made it increasingly difficult for him to continue his membership. He noted that his decision was taken after careful reflection on the state of the party and its future.

“I consider it honorable and necessary to step aside while wishing the party well should it one day find the courage and consensus to resolve its long-standing issues,” Suswam stated in the letter.
While he did not disclose his next political destination, Suswam has recently been linked to a coalition of opposition leaders working towards a common front ahead of the next general elections. The group has reportedly adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its preferred platform.
Suswam’s exit is the latest high-profile defection to hit the PDP, further highlighting the challenges facing the party as it struggles to manage internal divisions and retain influential figures ahead of forthcoming electoral contests.
