Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command have arrested three suspected cult members and recovered firearms, ammunition, and illicit drugs in a major crackdown on criminal gangs in the state.
The arrests, which were made following credible intelligence, are part of ongoing efforts by the police to dismantle cult networks and restore peace and security across Enugu State.
According to sources within the command, the three suspects, whose names have been withheld pending further investigation, allegedly confessed to being active members of a cult group operating in the area.
“During the operation, our men recovered several firearms, live ammunition, and quantities of hard drugs from the suspects,” a police source told reporters on Monday. “The suspects have made useful statements that are helping us in our investigation.”
The police source added that the command is working to track down other members of the gang who are currently on the run.
Cult-related violence has remained a major security concern in Enugu and other parts of the Southeast, with frequent clashes between rival groups leading to loss of lives and property.
The Enugu State Police Command has intensified patrols and intelligence gathering in recent months as part of efforts to curb the activities of criminal gangs, cultists, and armed robbers in the state.
The suspects are expected to be arraigned in court as soon as investigations are concluded, police said.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer for Enugu State Command could not be immediately reached for official comment on the arrests.
Meanwhile, residents have commended the police for the arrests and urged the command to sustain the tempo in the fight against crime and criminality in the state.
