Public anger has erupted after a viral video showed a man allegedly attempting to lure a young girl selling avocados with N1,000 to follow him to a secluded location for inappropriate purposes.

The footage, widely circulated on social media, was shared by content creator LordZeus, who confronted the suspect on camera after the incident.

During the confrontation, the man denied wrongdoing and claimed he was the child’s father. However, the girl immediately disputed the assertion, stating that she did not know him.

According to her account in the video, the man approached her while she was hawking and asked her to accompany him to a private area, promising her money in return. She said she refused the request, but he allegedly produced cash in an attempt to persuade her.

Observers described the exchange as deeply disturbing, particularly given the vulnerability of children who work alone on busy streets.

As tensions rose, some bystanders intervened, pleading on behalf of the suspect. They claimed he was mentally unstable and alleged that he had previously approached other children in a similar manner.

The defence sparked criticism from viewers online, many of whom argued that alleged mental health issues should not excuse behaviour perceived as predatory toward a minor.

In the video, LordZeus challenged the bystanders’ stance, questioning why such conduct should be tolerated regardless of the suspect’s condition.

The incident has reignited debate about the dangers faced by children engaged in street trading, a widespread phenomenon in many urban areas.

Child protection advocates warn that young hawkers — especially girls — are frequently exposed to harassment, exploitation, trafficking risks, and violence.

LordZeus used the platform to urge parents and guardians to be more vigilant, stressing that many affected children remain silent due to fear, shame, or lack of support.

As the video continues to circulate, social media users have called on law enforcement and child protection agencies to investigate the matter and ensure the safety of the child involved.

Experts say the case highlights broader systemic issues, including poverty, inadequate child welfare enforcement, and the normalization of child street trading.

They stress that protecting vulnerable children requires coordinated action involving families, communities, schools, and government institutions.

The incident has intensified calls for stricter enforcement of laws against child exploitation and for policies that address the root causes forcing minors into street hawking.

Advocates argue that beyond immediate accountability, long-term solutions must include social protection programmes, access to education, and economic support for families.
