The Local Government Inspector (LGI) of the Abeokuta South Local Government Area of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Abass Olalekan, has been arrested in connection with the death of a female corps member, Victoria Ariyo, who passed away on Tuesday due to pregnancy-related complications.

Sources indicate that Ariyo had reportedly terminated her pregnancy, and complications from the procedure led to her death.

Olalekan, who allegedly had a romantic relationship with the deceased, reportedly announced her passing verbally and organized her burial at Kobape Cemetery on Kobape-Sagamu Road, Abeokuta, with the help of other corps members.

Insiders also noted that Ariyo’s death comes less than a month after another female corps member and friend, Adeleye Mary, died under what has been described as mysterious circumstances.

Mary was serving in the same local government area and was attached to Ogun State Television (OGTV) for her Place of Primary Assignment (PPA).

A police source confirmed Olalekan’s arrest, stating:

“He is in our custody at the command’s headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta.”

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, declined to comment directly on Olalekan’s arrest or his alleged involvement. However, he confirmed that investigations into Ariyo’s death are ongoing, saying:

“I can confirm that the case of the demise of Victoria Ariyo is under investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department.”

The arrest has raised concerns among NYSC members and the public about safety and accountability within the scheme, particularly in cases involving personal relationships between officials and corps members.

Authorities have urged anyone with relevant information to cooperate with the investigation to ensure justice is served.
