The Delta State Government has strongly condemned reports of sexual harassment and rape allegedly carried out during a recent festival in Ozoro, describing the incidents as “barbaric” and unacceptable.

In a statement issued on Friday, March 20, 2026, the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, said the government was deeply disturbed by accounts suggesting that women were targeted under the guise of festival activities.

Aniagwu stressed that no cultural or traditional celebration should serve as a cover for acts that violate human dignity and fundamental rights.

He called on security agencies to immediately investigate the allegations and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.

“The government will not tolerate any act that undermines the safety and dignity of our citizens, especially women and vulnerable groups,” he said.

The state government has also directed community leaders and festival organisers to take proactive steps in strengthening safety protocols at public gatherings. This includes ensuring adequate security presence and implementing measures to prevent any form of harassment or violence during such events.

Officials emphasised that cultural festivals must remain platforms for unity, heritage, and celebration—not avenues for abuse or criminal behaviour.

Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding residents, the Delta State Government assured that it would continue to work closely with law enforcement agencies and local stakeholders to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.

The development has sparked concern among residents and advocacy groups, who are calling for swift action and justice for victims, as well as stricter enforcement of safety standards at large public events across the state.
