The Nigerian Army has dismissed circulating reports regarding the death of Corporal Ude Jude in Katsina State, describing some media accounts as misleading and factually inaccurate.

In a statement issued on April 12 by the Headquarters, 17 Brigade, the Army clarified that the deceased was a corporal — not a lieutenant as previously reported in certain outlets.

According to the statement, Corporal Ude, who enlisted in the Nigerian Army in 2012, hailed from Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The Army explained that the incident leading to his death did not take place within a military barracks, contrary to claims in some reports.

It stated that the soldier sustained injuries on February 16 while deployed at a Forward Operating Base in Funtua, Katsina State. The statement noted that he had temporarily left his duty post to purchase personal items when he was attacked by unidentified individuals.

“Preliminary findings indicate that the injuries may have resulted from a physical altercation with a civilian,” the statement said, adding that the suspected attackers fled the scene immediately after the incident.

The Army disclosed that local residents assisted the injured soldier, who subsequently reported to a medical facility for treatment.

He was later evacuated to the 17 Brigade Medical Centre, where he received further care and remained under medical supervision for stab wounds and related injuries.

Following treatment, Corporal Ude reportedly returned to his residence. However, on March 24, he collapsed outside his home and was rushed to the medical centre, where he was confirmed dead on arrival.

Responding to allegations of negligence, the Army insisted that appropriate medical attention and support were provided throughout the period of his treatment.

The statement further disclosed that burial arrangements were made in accordance with military tradition, with full military honours accorded to the deceased. His personal belongings were also formally handed over to his family.

The Nigerian Army said investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.

It urged members of the public and media organisations to disregard unverified claims and allow due process to take its course.

Military authorities reaffirmed their commitment to the welfare of personnel and to ensuring accountability in the circumstances surrounding the corporal’s death.
