Koke: Atletico Madrid Must Show ‘Personality’ to Stop Barcelona Comeback

Koke has outlined what Atlético Madrid must do to overcome FC Barcelona in their decisive UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg.

The Spanish midfielder stressed that his side must play with “personality” to resist Barcelona’s expected fightback after securing a 2-0 first-leg victory at Camp Nou.

Atletico will host the return leg at the Metropolitano Stadium on Tuesday, aiming to reach the semi-finals for the first time since 2017. However, Barcelona five-time European champions, arrive determined to overturn the deficit and keep their campaign alive.

Koke highlighted the need to handle Barcelona’s aggressive pressing style, which he described as intense and suffocating.

“It’s hugely important to beat their press,” he said. “They push very high, close to the halfway line, and try to suffocate you. That’s where our personality comes in—wanting the ball, making ourselves available, and running in behind.”

The clash will be the third meeting between both sides in two weeks and their sixth encounter this season, with Atletico already knocking Barcelona out of the Copa del Rey semi-finals.

“We know each other perfectly,” Koke added. “It’s important to take the ball off them, attack spaces well, and stay composed in possession.”

The midfielder also reflected on past successes, including his goal in the 2014 quarter-finals that helped Atletico reach the final. The club also made the final in 2016, losing both times to Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, Atletico coach Diego Simeone remained cautious ahead of the tie, offering little insight into his lineup, including the fitness of goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

“We know how strong our opponent is,” Simeone said. “But we are clear about our objective, which is to go through.”
