The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has condemned what it described as a growing wave of politically motivated violence and suppression of opposition activities in Ideato North Local Government Area and Ideato South Local Government Area of Imo State.

In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, and dated April 9, 2026, the group alleged that democratic freedoms in the affected areas were being undermined through intimidation, violence and unlawful disruption of political activities.

HURIWA called on the Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma, to uphold his constitutional responsibilities by ensuring the safety and rights of all residents, regardless of political affiliation. The group warned against what it termed a system where dissenting voices are allegedly silenced through force.

The rights body expressed concern over reports that supporters of a political movement in Ideato North linked to Ikenga Ugochinyere, a member of the House of Representatives, had allegedly been subjected to harassment and attacks by armed individuals described as operating under the guise of vigilantes.

According to HURIWA, there were also claims of attempts to disrupt lawful political gatherings, including the alleged seizure of event venues and destruction of property belonging to opposition members.

The association stressed that the 1999 Constitution (as amended) guarantees citizens the rights to peaceful assembly, freedom of association and participation in governance, noting that such rights are fundamental and enforceable.

It further warned that the Imo State Government bears constitutional and moral responsibility for maintaining law and order, stating that continued violence could attract national and international scrutiny.

In addition to concerns over political tensions, HURIWA drew attention to allegations raised by Amnesty International regarding the operations of the “Tiger Base,” an anti-kidnapping unit of the Nigeria Police Force in Owerri.

The group referenced claims of prolonged detention without trial, torture, extortion, enforced disappearances and inhumane detention conditions at the facility, describing the allegations as serious violations of constitutional and international human rights obligations.

HURIWA called for an immediate, transparent and independent investigation into the claims, urging that any officers found culpable should be prosecuted.

The association also appealed to the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the Department of State Services and the Minister of Defence to intervene decisively to prevent further escalation of tensions and to safeguard lives and property in the state.

Reiterating its stance, HURIWA demanded an end to all forms of political intimidation, the withdrawal of unlawful armed groups from political spaces, protection for lawful assemblies and a comprehensive probe into alleged abuses at the Tiger Base facility.

The group warned that Nigeria’s democracy must not be undermined by violence or repression, insisting that respect for the rule of law remains central to sustaining democratic governance.
