The Abesan Estate community is set to host its first-ever Security Summit, where notable leaders and security experts, including the  Executive Chairman of Mosan Okunola LCDA,  Honorable Princess Olabisi Adebajo (ABISCO), Assistant  Commissioner of Police and former DPO of Ipaja Police Station, Tokunbo Abaniwonda, SN Dauda Fatima, Agege Area Command and several other experts will be key speakers.

The summit is scheduled for 1o am on October 1O, 2024, at the Amen Centre inside the estate.

Abesan Estate, one of the largest residential areas in Lagos, has been grappling with increasing cases of burglary, theft, and vandalism over the past year.

Residents have raised concerns about the safety of their properties and loved ones, urging the estate’s leadership to take stronger measures.

In response, the Abesan Estate Development Group, headed by a former president of Abesant Estate Residents’ Association (AERA) Elder Bisola Ogunyanwo organized this summit to address these challenges and create a platform for dialogue between security agencies, estate management, and residents.

Princess Adebajo, being the Chief Security Officer of Mosan Okunola, will likely emphasize the need for residents to engage more actively in neighborhood watch programs and collaborate closely with law enforcement.

Similarly, ACP Abaniwonda, a former DPO of the Ipaja Police Station with deep ties to the community, will focus on policy-related solutions to improve estate security.

She is expected to discuss the role of the local government in supporting community safety initiatives, including budget allocations for surveillance technologies, street lighting, and the deployment of more security personnel.

In addition to these key figures, other security experts are scheduled to speak on modern strategies for estate protection.

Topics will range from the use of technology, such as CCTV systems and alarm installations, to strategies for fostering better relationships between police forces and the community.

The summit will also feature presentations on personal safety tips for residents, especially the elderly and vulnerable, as well as training on how to respond in case of emergencies.

Organizers of the event hope that the summit will lead to the formation of a more coordinated and sustainable security framework within Abesan Estate. “Our goal is not just to discuss the problems but to come up with practical solutions that can be implemented immediately,” said the summit’s coordinator, Elder Bisola Ogunyoanwo

The success of the summit will heavily rely on resident participation. In preparation, estate management has called on all households to attend the event and provide feedback on security matters affecting them directly.

This engagement is critical to ensuring that the recommendations made during the summit are tailored to the specific needs and concerns of the estate’s diverse population.

Furthermore, there will be a special panel discussion on neighborhood vigilance, where residents can voice their concerns and share their experiences.

The Panelists include ACP Abaniwonda, SN Dauda from NDLEA Agege Command, Ajala Babatunde, a security expert, Mr. Odumosu from the Odua Peoples Congress (OPC) and  Abiola Adebajo, a social innovation expert and founder inspire Lagos Market.

The disccusion will be anchored by Yomi Sodunke, media consultant and CEO of Yomisodunke studios.

The Abesan Estate Security Summit is seen as a model for other residential communities in Lagos facing similar security challenges.

If successful, the recommendations and strategies that emerge from this event could be replicated across other estates in the city. With urban crime rates continuing to rise, initiatives like these are crucial to safeguarding the well-being of residents.

Security experts are optimistic that the summit could foster long-term cooperation between residents, estate authorities, and local law enforcement, creating a blueprint for improved estate safety across Lagos.
