The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly denied accusations of undermining Nigeria’s democracy, clarifying that its sole ambition is to democratically unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Bolaji Abdullahi, the interim National Publicity Secretary of the ADC, issued a statement on Thursday in Abuja, directly addressing a tweet from Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

Onanuga had alleged that the opposition was plotting to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s government before 2027.

Abdullahi dismissed the allegation as a baseless and false narrative, suggesting it was a tactic to clamp down on opposition leaders and their activities under the guise of national security.

“We are not soldiers; we are politicians. We don’t have bullets; we only have the ballots,” Abdullahi stated emphatically.

“When the time comes, we will only present our solutions and an alternative vision of the future to the Nigerian people and leave them to make their choice.”

He questioned why the APC, being the first opposition party to assume power in Nigeria, now appears to find the very existence of an opposition “strange.”

Abdullahi urged President Tinubu to caution his aides against further baseless and dangerous allegations that could inflame the political climate, even with the next election two years away.

He also called on Nigerians to reject any underhanded tactics designed to discredit the opposition and silence alternative voices.

Emphasizing the importance of a healthy democracy, Abdullahi stressed that Nigeria’s democratic well-being hinges on a free, open, and competitive political environment.

He reiterated the ADC’s unwavering commitment to building a better Nigeria through peaceful and democratic participation.
