AFCON 2025: Lookman plays down on-pitch dispute with Osimhen

Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has played down reports of a heated exchange between himself and Victor Osimhen during Nigeria’s emphatic 4–0 victory over Mozambique in the round of 16 of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Monday night.

The incident occurred in the first half of the encounter, a period in which both players found the back of the net and combined effectively to put Nigeria firmly in control.

Lookman was instrumental in the win, providing two assists for Osimhen’s goals before also getting on the scoresheet himself.

However, tensions briefly flared when Osimhen appeared visibly displeased after Lookman opted to take a shot rather than pass the ball during a promising attacking move.

The exchange between the duo sparked reactions among fans and commentators, especially after Osimhen was seen moments later slowing down in attack and gesturing to head coach Eric Chelle to substitute him.

Despite the momentary disagreement, Lookman was quick to dismiss suggestions of any serious rift, insisting that the focus should remain on the team’s dominant performance and qualification for the quarter-finals.

“I don’t think that is really important. The team won 4–0,” Lookman told journalists after the match.

He also reaffirmed his close relationship with the Napoli striker, describing Osimhen as a key figure within the squad.

“Vic is my number one guy, everybody knows this,” Lookman said. “Top striker, top player, so all of the rest is not important.”

Nigeria’s convincing win further underlined the attacking strength of the Super Eagles as they continue their quest for continental glory, with both Lookman and Osimhen playing central roles in the team’s progress at the tournament.
