The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) chided Deputy Governor Nkem Okeke of Anambra State for his defection from APGA to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the build up to the governorship election in the State on November 6. The APGA leadership declared that the deputy governor’s defection has no consequence on the chances of the party winning the November election.
Okeke had on defection to the ruling APC in Abuja, joined the train of the APC Caretaker Committee Chairman, Governor Mai Muni Buni of Yobe State, and Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House.
APGA National Publicity Secretary, Tex Okechukwu, had in a statement in Abuja, asserted that the defection of the deputy governor has no consequence to the party in the forthcoming governorship election in Anambra State. Okechukwu stated that the defection of the deputy governor is long expected, noting that Deputy Governor Okeke has been showing discontentment in the party since he lost the governorship ticket of APGA during the primary election.
According to Okechukwu, “The deputy governor had thought that the governor and the party were going to hand over the governorship ticket of the party in the last primary to him on a platter.
“When that didn’t happen, he started behaving abnormally, even to the point of insubordination and dereliction of duties.”
Okechukwu emphasized that APGA construed the defection of the deputy governor without formal notification to the party or the governor as uncalled for, ill-timed, and ill-advised, noting that the governor had always treated him with respect, love, and consideration.
The national publicity secretary declared that the party condemned the desperation being demonstrated by the opposition APC in the build-up to the November governorship election. The APC had embarked on aggressive political recruitment in Anambra State to strengthen the party for the governorship election. APGA has been the APC’s most casualty.
