In a groundbreaking initiative set to transform Africa’s media landscape, the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has launched the continent’s first indigenous stock image repository, the Nigeria Stock Image Bank (NSIB).
This initiative aims to engage over 100,000 photographers, 10,000 models, content creators, and other professionals in its initial phase.
The council recently inaugurated a 10-member committee to oversee the project, part of ARCON’s broader effort to elevate the African advertising industry to a global level.
ARCON’s Director-General, Dr. Olalekan Fadolapo, highlighted the significance of the initiative, noting that it aligns with Nigeria’s strategy to promote local content and support economic growth in line with the government’s ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda.
“The establishment of Nigeria’s Stock Image Bank is a crucial step in promoting local content and boosting the economy,” said Dr. Fadolapo. “This pioneering effort will empower our local talent and ensure that our visual narrative is authentically represented on the global stage.”
The newly formed committee, led by renowned photographer Kelechi Amadi Obi, is tasked with developing a blueprint for the image bank’s implementation, including technological infrastructure, copyright protection, and strategies for international market reach. The committee has been given a three-month deadline to submit an interim report.

Amadi Obi, also President of the Professional Photographers Association of Nigeria, expressed his commitment to the project, stating, “It is an honor to lead this committee. This initiative is essential for enabling local content creators to tell Nigeria’s story authentically. Until we become our own storytellers, others will define our narrative.”
He emphasized the need for a diverse and robust stock of images to make the image bank appealing globally, and stressed the importance of fair compensation and recognition for contributors.
Industry experts believe that ARCON’s move will have a significant impact on the global media’s perception of Africa, fostering cultural authenticity and providing a platform for African visual narratives to reach a wider audience. The NSIB is seen as a potential model for other African countries seeking to amplify their presence on the world stage.
