Dele Farotimi’s book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, has soared to bestseller status on Amazon following his arrest over a defamation petition filed by senior lawyer and businessman Afe Babalola.

The book, published in July 2024, delves into systemic corruption within Nigeria’s judiciary, accusing prominent legal figures of misconduct—a claim that has now placed its author in legal peril.

Initially met with modest sales, the book experienced an explosive surge in demand after Farotimi’s arrest, with Nigerians flocking to online platforms and local bookstores to scrutinize its contentious revelations.

Farotimi was detained on Tuesday in Lagos by armed police officers and transported 300 kilometers to Ado Ekiti, where the 93-year-old Babalola resides.

The prominent lawyer, an influential figure in Nigerian legal circles, alleges that the book defames him by suggesting he has compromised the judiciary’s integrity.

On Wednesday, Farotimi was arraigned in Ekiti, and the presiding judge ordered his remand, with a bail hearing set for December 10.

“The arrest has drawn national attention to the case, raising critical questions about freedom of expression and the boundaries of critique in Nigeria,” said human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong. “It appears to have unintentionally bolstered the very narrative the book seeks to expose.”

Critics and supporters alike acknowledge that Farotimi’s arrest has catapulted Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System into the public consciousness.

The book’s critiques of judicial corruption resonate with many Nigerians, who view the justice system as riddled with inefficiencies and favoritism.

Political analyst Jide Ojo commented, “The dramatic increase in sales reflects public curiosity about the claims in the book. By attempting to silence Farotimi, his detractors may have inadvertently amplified his message.”

The book’s Amazon bestseller status signals international interest, with commentators suggesting that the controversy could tarnish Nigeria’s global image.

Farotimi’s legal battle has rekindled debates over Nigeria’s defamation laws and their use as tools to stifle dissent. Some argue that the case underscores the need for greater protections for freedom of speech.

“A society that punishes critique rather than addressing the underlying issues risks fostering resentment and eroding public trust,” said Ayo Ademiluyi, a Lagos-based legal scholar. “This incident highlights the thin line between defamation and legitimate criticism of public institutions.”

The defamation case has also raised concerns about the power dynamics at play in Nigeria’s judicial system. “When individuals like Babalola wield significant influence, it can deter whistleblowers and critics from speaking out,” said Chidi Odinkalu, former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission.

The arrest has sparked widespread outrage on social media, with many Nigerians decrying what they perceive as an attempt to silence Farotimi. Hashtags such as #FreeFarotimi and #JudicialReformNow have trended on Twitter, reflecting public sentiment.

“This isn’t just about a book or an arrest; it’s about the right to hold the powerful accountable,” tweeted activist Rinu Oduala.

As Nigerians continue to debate the case, Farotimi’s arrest underscores the urgent need for a judiciary that upholds justice and transparency. His work has become a symbol of resistance for many, embodying the struggle for accountability in a system that critics argue is resistant to reform.

How the defamation case unfolds will likely shape discussions around judicial accountability and freedom of expression in Nigeria for years to come. For now, Farotimi’s book has become more than a critique—it is a rallying cry for change.
