Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has dismissed speculation suggesting that Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus could leave the club during the January transfer window.
Reports had linked the 27-year-old with a potential return to Brazil, but Arteta was emphatic ahead of Arsenal’s Champions League clash against Monaco, stating, “No, no sense,” when asked directly about the rumors.
Jesus, who joined Arsenal from Manchester City two-and-a-half years ago, made an immediate impact on the Gunners’ attack.
However, his momentum was disrupted by a severe knee injury sustained during the 2022 World Cup, and he has struggled to regain form since.
This year, Jesus has scored just one goal, with his sole strike this season coming in a Carabao Cup match against Preston North End.
Despite appearing as a substitute in Sunday’s Premier League draw against Fulham, he failed to influence the game significantly.
Arteta acknowledged Jesus’s struggles but backed the striker to overcome his challenges. “Like all strikers, they go through phases and moments, and that gap is becoming big,” Arteta said.
“It’s true that injuries and absences have played a part, but his attitude has been really good, and we’re going to help him get back to his best.”

As Arsenal prepare to face Monaco, Arteta is grappling with a defensive shortage. Key left-back options, including Riccardo Calafiori, Takehiro Tomiyasu, and Oleksandr Zinchenko, are likely unavailable. This situation could pave the way for Kieran Tierney to make a surprise return to the starting lineup.
Tierney, who hasn’t played for Arsenal since May 2023, spent last season on loan at Real Sociedad. Arteta praised the Scotland international’s professionalism, saying, “He is ready, he’s training well, and he’s earned the opportunity with the way he’s behaved and worked with us.”
Looking ahead to the match, Arteta expressed admiration for Monaco’s recent form, calling them a “really good side.”
He highlighted their organization, intensity, and transition play as key strengths, noting their impressive performances in both the Champions League and domestic league.
A win tonight would put Arsenal in a strong position to secure automatic qualification for the next round, and Arteta is determined to see his team rise to the challenge. “It’s going to be a very good test for us,” he said.
