Nigerian Afrobeats star Ayra Starr has expressed admiration for Nigerian men, describing them as confident and supportive partners.

The singer made the remarks during a recent appearance on Way Up with Angela Yee, a radio show hosted by American media personality Angela Yee.

Speaking during the interview, Ayra Starr said Nigerian men often show strong commitment to caring for their partners and are generally confident in their relationships.

According to her, their attitude in relationships is comparable to that of men in New York City, whom she also described as confident and assertive.

“Nigerian men love to take care of their women. They are very supportive of their wife or girlfriend,” the singer said. “They are very, very confident, so it is almost the same thing as New York men.”

Despite her praise, the singer added that she still maintains some reservations, noting that men across the world share similar traits.

“But you know, men are men. A man is a man still. It is a universal thing,” she added.

The comments come months after the singer faced backlash on social media, particularly from some Nigerian men, over what critics described as contradictions between her public advocacy for feminism and some of her actions.

The controversy intensified after her enthusiastic reaction to meeting American R&B star Chris Brown circulated online, alongside a dance video she shared featuring a song by controversial Nigerian singer Naira Marley.

Some critics argued that those moments did not align with what they perceived as her feminist stance on social media.

Ayra Starr has also previously faced criticism over her fashion choices, which have often sparked debates online.

In response to critics in 2023, the singer defended her personal style, saying those questioning her outfit choices were neither her “pastor” nor her “mother,” and therefore had no authority over how she chooses to express herself.

The fast-rising singer, known for hits like Rush and Bloody Samaritan, continues to enjoy global recognition as one of the leading voices of the Afrobeats movement.
