Ayra Starr, Tyla lead as African stars shine at 2024 MTV EMA nominations

MTV has unveiled its nominations for the 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs), with African artists taking center stage, highlighting their significant achievements in global music.

Afrobeats sensations Ayra Starr and South African star Tyla lead the African contingent, each securing four nominations in various categories.

Ayra Starr, one of Nigeria’s rising stars, has earned nominations in key categories, including “Best New,” “Best Afrobeats,” “Best African Act,” and “Best Push” for her standout performances on MTV Push.

Starr’s meteoric rise in the music industry over the past year has cemented her status as a major force in Afrobeats, and her recognition in these diverse categories reflects her growing international appeal.

Tyla, marking her first-ever nominations at the MTV EMAs, is also a standout among African artists.

She has been nominated for “Best New,” “Best Afrobeats,” “Best R&B,” and “Best African Act.” Tyla’s success represents a major breakthrough for South African music on the global stage.

In addition to Starr and Tyla, other African heavyweights like Burna Boy, Rema, Asake, and Tems have also been recognized.

They will compete in the “Best Afrobeats” category, which further underscores Afrobeats’ domination of the global music scene.

Asake, Diamond Platnumz, DBN Gogo, and TitoM & Yuppe Gogo have also secured nominations in the “Best African Act” category, reflecting the diverse musical talent from across the continent.

Monde Twala, Senior Vice President & General Manager of Paramount Africa and Lead BET International, expressed pride in the African artists’ achievements. “We are incredibly proud to see African artists continue to shine on the global stage at the 2024 MTV EMAs.

The nominations reflect the remarkable talent and diversity of Africa’s music scene, with Afrobeats and other genres making a powerful impact worldwide,” Twala said.

He added that artists like Ayra Starr, Tyla, Burna Boy, and Tems are “true ambassadors of African excellence,” whose success continues to inspire the next generation of creatives across Africa.

Twala also reaffirmed MTV’s commitment to amplifying African voices and showcasing their artistry on the global stage.

The 2024 MTV EMAs are set to be a celebration of Africa’s ever-expanding influence on the global music industry, with artists from across the continent continuing to make waves with their unique sounds and talents.
