The agent of Gareth Bale has branded Real Madrid supporters “nothing short of a disgrace” after they jeered him throughout their recent 1-0 loss to Barcelona.

Bale, 29, was subjected to constant boos at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium including when his name was read out and as he left the pitch while being substituted.

It was further evidence of the disconnect between Real’s demanding fanbase and Bale, who has struggled for regular playing time under Santiago Solari.

A notable moment came in Los Blancos’ recent win over Levante when Bale came on with 16 minutes to go. Moments later Solari’s men won a spot-kick, which the Welshman duly converted.

However, the ex-Spurs man was in no mood to celebrate and brushed off the jubilant Lucas Vázquez.

This incident didn’t sit well among Real’s support, who have a love-hate relationship with Bale, and they made their feelings explicitly known in the recent league visit of Barcelona when they booed him on several occasions.

The abuse from the stands has annoyed Bale’s agent Jonathan Barnett, who feels that his client deserves respect because of what he has helped the club achieve in recent years.

“This generation of Real fans will be talking about Gareth’s goals for years to come,” he raveled.

“Frankly, they should be ashamed of themselves. Gareth deserves the greatest of respect. The way Real fans have treated him is nothing short of a disgrace.”

Bale’s future?

Right now Real Madrid only have the Champions League, which they’ve held for more than 1000 days, to fight for during the run-in.

Barcelona recently eliminated them from the Copa del Rey at the semi-final stage and a few days later Ernesto Valverde’s side – who lead the Spanish championship – put 12 points between themselves and their arch-rivals.

Real face Ajax, whom they defeated 2-1 in Amsterdam, on Tuesday night for a place in the Champions League quarter finals.

Bale is expected to feature but it remains to be seen whether he starts.

His present deal expires in June 2022 but the jury is out as to whether he will see it out. Bale’s injury troubles have made him unreliable in the eyes of many Madrid fans, while his wages may be a potential stumbling block for any would-be suitors.
