Breaking: Israel launches pre-emptive strike on Iran, declares nationwide state of emergency

Israel has carried out a pre-emptive military strike against Iran, dramatically escalating tensions in the Middle East, according to a statement issued early Saturday by Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz.

In an official announcement, Katz said the operation was undertaken “to remove threats to the State of Israel,” signalling a major escalation in hostilities between the two regional adversaries.

Following the strike, Katz declared a special state of emergency across Israel, warning of imminent retaliatory missile and drone attacks from Iran that could target Israeli civilian areas.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) activated nationwide alerts shortly after the announcement. Air raid sirens sounded in multiple cities, while emergency notifications were sent directly to residents’ mobile phones, urging them to remain close to protected spaces or bomb shelters.

Israel’s Home Front Command moved the country to “Essential Activity” status, effectively shutting down schools, banning public gatherings, and suspending non-essential workplace operations. Only critical sectors, including emergency services and key infrastructure, were authorised to continue functioning.

The IDF described the measures as proactive, aimed at preparing civilians for potential incoming missile or drone strikes.

In Iran, reports emerged of explosions in the capital, Tehran. Witness accounts cited by local media indicated that at least three blasts were heard in central districts, including the Republic area.

The semi-official Fars News Agency reported that several missiles had struck parts of the city. However, specific details regarding the targets, extent of damage, or possible casualties were not immediately available.
