Two English Premier League giants, Chelsea F.C. and Manchester City F.C., endured a difficult night in European football on Wednesday after both clubs suffered heavy defeats in their respective UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first-leg encounters.

Chelsea were beaten 5–2 by French champions Paris Saint‑Germain F.C. in an action-packed clash at the Parc des Princes in Paris. Despite managing two goals, the London side struggled to contain PSG’s attacking threat throughout the match, leaving them with a significant deficit ahead of the second leg.

In Spain, reigning European powerhouse Real Madrid C.F. delivered a dominant performance to defeat Manchester City 3–0 at the iconic Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid.

The Spanish side controlled much of the game and capitalised on defensive lapses from City to secure a comfortable advantage going into the return fixture.

According to football statistics platform Opta, the twin defeats created an unwanted record in the competition’s history. It marked the first time two English Premier League clubs have each lost by a margin of three or more goals on the same day in the history of the European Cup and Champions League.

The results leave both English sides facing uphill battles as they prepare for the decisive second-leg matches in England next week.

Chelsea will attempt to overturn their deficit when they host PSG at Stamford Bridge, while Manchester City will look to mount a comeback against Real Madrid at the Etihad Stadium.

With qualification for the quarter-finals at stake, both Premier League clubs will need near-perfect performances if they hope to reverse the damage inflicted in the first leg.
