A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has granted bail in the sum of N500 million to former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.

The ruling was delivered on Wednesday by the presiding judge, Justice Emeka Nwite, who approved bail for Malami alongside his son, Abubakar Abdulaziz Malami, and his wife, Bashir Asabe, all of whom are standing trial before the court.

In his decision, Justice Nwite held that the defendants were entitled to bail pending the determination of the charges against them, noting that the offences alleged were bailable under the law.

Consequently, the court allowed each of the three defendants to bail in the sum of N500 million, with conditions to be stipulated by the court.

Although details of the charges were not extensively argued during the bail hearing, the court emphasised that the bail conditions must be met to ensure the defendants’ continued availability for trial and to prevent interference with the judicial process.

The matter was subsequently adjourned to a later date for further proceedings, while the defendants were ordered to perfect their bail in line with the court’s directives.

Malami, who served as Nigeria’s Attorney-General and Minister of Justice under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, has maintained his innocence, while his legal team continues to challenge the allegations brought against him.
