A Magistrate Court sitting in Injiwaji, Damaturu, has sentenced a 22-year-old man, Rabilu Sani, to 12 years’ imprisonment for sexually assaulting a four-year-old girl in Jakusko Local Government Area of Yobe State.
Delivering judgment, the presiding judge of Magistrate Court 1 held that the prosecution had successfully established its case beyond reasonable doubt. The court found the defendant guilty of the offence and imposed a 12-year prison term without the option of a fine.
The case, which sparked public concern in the Jakusko community, had generated widespread speculation, including claims that the convict was infected with HIV.
However, the court clarified during proceedings that medical examinations conducted as part of the investigation confirmed that Rabilu Sani tested negative for the virus.

The prosecution team presented medical reports, witness testimonies, and other evidence during the trial, which lasted several months. The court ruled that the totality of evidence presented proved the charge against the defendant.
The Yobe State Government played a key role in pursuing the case to its conclusion. The Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hajiya Ya Jalo Badama, led efforts to ensure that justice was served for the victim. Officials from the ministry closely monitored the proceedings and provided support throughout the legal process.
Speaking after the judgment, government representatives reiterated their commitment to protecting children’s rights and ensuring that perpetrators of sexual violence are held accountable under the law. They also urged residents to promptly report cases of abuse to relevant authorities to prevent further harm and ensure swift intervention.
The conviction is seen as part of broader efforts by the state government to combat sexual and gender-based violence and to strengthen child protection mechanisms across Yobe State.
