In response to President Bola Tinubu’s recent national broadcast addressing the ongoing mass protests across Nigeria, criticisms have emerged over the substance and tone of his speech.

While the President attempted to address the concerns of protesters, many found his remarks lacking in concrete solutions and dismissive of the genuine grievances expressed by the youth.

Critics argue that the President’s speech was filled with a litany of government interventions, but failed to provide tangible answers to the demands of the protesters.

The President also came under fire for allegedly targeting imaginary opposition and political opponents, rather than acknowledging the grassroots nature of the protests.

The discontent, they argue, is not politically motivated but is a reflection of widespread frustration, anger, and hopelessness among Nigerian youths who feel neglected and denied opportunities for a better future.

The protests, they insist, are a response to real issues—grinding poverty, joblessness, and government mismanagement—that are visible and palpable across the country.

Despite these shortcomings, some commentators noted that President Tinubu’s tone was notably sober and empathetic, avoiding the arrogance and grandstanding that has fueled unrest in other nations.

Addressing Nigerians as “my fellow Nigerians,” the President appeared to understand the gravity of the situation.

However, in terms of offering actionable solutions to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians, critics argue that Tinubu’s speech fell short.

They point out the ongoing issues of government waste, excessive spending, corruption, and a lack of decisive action to address the economic and social challenges facing the country.

The critics call for an end to the blame game and urge the government to take concrete steps to address the root causes of the unrest.

They warn that the current administration, as a continuation of the previous government, must stop blaming its predecessors and instead focus on implementing meaningful reforms.

President Tinubu, they suggest, still has an opportunity to steer the country away from the brink of collapse by employing effective statecraft and addressing the pressing concerns of the Nigerian people.
