Delta CJ Diai frees seven prisoners, reviews 1228 cases

Justice Tessy Diai, Chief Judge of Delta State, has released seven awaiting trial inmates after reviewing 1,228 warrants across the state. The inmates were set free following the legal advice of the Director of Public Prosecution, Mr. Anthony Orhorhorho, who confirmed they had no case to answer.

The Chief Judge of Delta State, Justice Tessy Diai, has announced the release of seven awaiting trial inmates from various custodial centres in the state.

This decision follows the legal advice of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Mr. Anthony Orhorhorho, who confirmed that the inmates had no case to answer.

In a statement made available to newsmen on Monday in Asaba by Mr. Onoriode Etastemi, the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Justice, Justice Diai provided details of the exercise, which began on March 10 at the Warri Correctional Centre.

A total of 350 warrants were reviewed during the exercise.

Justice Diai outlined the process, mentioning that one inmate was released from the Warri Correctional Centre.

In Sapele, 138 warrants were reviewed but no one was released.

At the Sapele Remand Home, 10 warrants were reviewed, with no releases granted.

In Kwale custodial centre, 181 warrants were reviewed, and one individual was released after spending a considerable time behind bars on charges of arson and kidnapping.

Meanwhile, in Agbor, 135 warrants were reviewed, but no releases were made. At Ogwashi-Uku, a total of 428 warrants were reviewed, and five individuals regained their freedom.

In total, 1,228 warrants were reviewed during the exercise, but no bail was granted across the state, aside from the seven inmates released.

Justice Diai thanked all those involved in the process, including the DPP and his team, for their hard work and dedication, which contributed to the smooth dispensation of justice in the state.

She emphasized that the goal of the visit was to ensure that custody cases are progressing smoothly in the courts.

The individuals set free from the Ogwashi-Uku Correctional Centre are Yohanna Selnan, John Tanko, Gwak Imana, Ventim Usman, and Chukwuemeka Ugwu, all male.

Chukwuemeka Ugwu, who was arrested on charges of robbery and kidnapping, expressed his gratitude for the release, claiming he was innocent of the crimes.

He prayed for Justice Diai’s continued good health and success in her efforts for humanity.
