In a world where every country struggle to build its military into a stronghold, isn’t it amazing that the Great Britain despite its influence has a relatively few personnels in the military? Reasons for this is carefully but neatly addressed in subsequent paragraphs.

The British army has about 82, 000 full-time regular personnel in the army and about 30,000 personnel in reserves according to Wikipedia. This is low compared to the rest of the big and powerful nations of the world. But while this is unbelievable, different factors make it so.

Firstly, it should be understood that Britain has a relatively small land area compared to most of other big countries in Europe. Britain is more like a big island; where the large parts of her land is surrounded by water. This makes it hard for the empire to build her land soldiers into multiple millions rather, the Navy seems to be the most vital and important of the British military.

Also, Britain doesn’t have as many populations. In fact, Nigeria is more than twice of Britain’s population. As a result of this, the British army is equally small. Due to the presence of huge water body, more personnels are being recruited into the Navy rather than the army or foot soldiers.

Having recognized their deficiencies in manpower, the British came about with a smart way around it. The British Army, Royal Navy and last but not least RAF are some of the best trained at what they do on the planet. They are trained to use the tools they are given in the best possible way they can and this made them generally head and shoulders above anyone else they come up against.

The Royal Navy were very efficient during the Second World War. Their performance in the war saw them withstand the German aerial invasion where submarines were effectively used to resist the German invasion.

It is safe to conclude in the case of Britain that size is not power. What they lack in manpower, they make up for in training and equipment.

Over times, countries are beginning to realize the power of the British army. So much that their small number doesn’t determine their strengths as a single British army is well trained and equipped.
