Dickson dumps PDP for Nigeria Democratic Congress, says party ‘on life support’

Former Governor of Bayelsa State and serving senator, Seriake Dickson, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and announced his defection to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Dickson made the announcement on Thursday while addressing a world press conference, where he explained that his decision was driven by deep concerns over the current state of the PDP and the broader political direction of the country.

The former governor described himself as “a man of conviction,” stressing that he could no longer remain in a party he believes is struggling to remain politically viable.

According to him, the PDP is presently in a critical condition and unable to effectively play its role as a strong opposition force in Nigeria’s democratic space.

“I am a man of conviction. The Peoples Democratic Party at the moment is in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU),” Dickson said during the briefing.

He further argued that Nigeria’s democracy would be endangered if the country drifted toward a one-party political system.

Dickson warned that a weak opposition undermines democratic accountability, noting that Nigeria needs multiple vibrant political platforms to sustain competitive politics and protect democratic institutions.

“The nation cannot afford to become a one-party state,” he added, emphasizing the importance of strengthening alternative political platforms.

Political observers say Dickson’s move could have implications for opposition politics ahead of future elections, particularly given his influence in the South-South region and his experience as a former governor and federal lawmaker.

Analysts note that defections among senior politicians often reflect deeper structural challenges within parties, including leadership disputes, ideological divisions, and strategic realignments ahead of electoral contests.

The development is expected to trigger reactions within the Peoples Democratic Party, where Dickson has long been regarded as one of its prominent figures, especially during his tenure as governor of Bayelsa State between 2012 and 2020.

Further details of Dickson’s plans within the Nigeria Democratic Congress are expected to emerge as the political landscape continues to evolve.
