Suspected terrorists unleashed violence on the Ariko community in Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State in the early hours of Easter Sunday, killing at least seven people and abducting several others in a coordinated attack on two churches.

The assailants reportedly invaded the quiet rural community during Easter celebrations, targeting worshippers gathered at the ECWA Church and St. Augustine Catholic Church. The attack has left residents in shock and mourning.

According to local sources, heavily armed gunmen stormed the area in large numbers, surrounding the community before opening fire indiscriminately on congregants. The attackers reportedly operated for an extended period, shooting sporadically and creating panic as worshippers scrambled for safety.

The councillor representing Awon Ward, Mark Bawa, confirmed the incident, stating that casualty figures were still being verified. Initial reports indicated that between seven and eight persons were killed during the attack.

“I am currently on my way to the community to ascertain the exact number of casualties. Some sources said seven persons were killed, while others claimed eight. I will provide an update once details are confirmed,” Bawa said.

“The attackers came in large numbers. They surrounded the area and began shooting sporadically at worshippers. Several people were killed, while many others were taken away into the bush,” he added.

Residents lamented that the attackers faced no immediate resistance, attributing the situation to the vulnerability of rural communities and the lack of swift security response. Poor telecommunications connectivity in the area was also cited as a major challenge, making it difficult for residents to call for help during the invasion.

The incident has further heightened concerns over the persistent insecurity in parts of Kaduna State, particularly in rural communities that have experienced repeated attacks in recent years.aa

As of the time of filing this report, the Kaduna State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement regarding the Easter Sunday attack.
