The Edo State Government has expressed concern over the recent acts of destruction attributed to thugs allegedly aligned with former Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu, purportedly to enforce a court judgment reinstating him to office.

Shaibu reportedly led thugs along Airport Road in Benin City, attacking innocent citizens and causing chaos among those conducting their lawful activities.

In a statement signed by Hon. Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Osa Nehikhare, the Edo State Government warned Shaibu to cease his violent actions under the pretext of enforcing the court judgment.

“He is reminded that he is not above the law and is liable for the wanton destruction perpetrated by him and his associates,” the statement read.

The government noted Shaibu’s documented history of violent behavior and reiterated warnings from respected societal figures, including the Benin Monarch, urging him to shun violence.

“We want to reiterate that Shaibu will face the consequences of his violent actions as he seeks to return to the Edo State Government House, despite knowing that a stay of execution of the judgment has been filed,” the statement continued.

The government urged the public to remain calm and continue their lawful activities, assuring that the state will use all available resources to restore and maintain law and order in the face of these provocations.

This situation follows a recent judgment by the Federal High Court in Abuja, which reinstated Shaibu as Deputy Governor. Justice James Omotosho declared his impeachment by the Edo State House of Assembly illegal, unconstitutional, null, and void, citing violations of sections 188 and 35 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

The court ordered that Shaibu be restored to his position and receive all due salaries, allowances, and benefits from the date of his illegal impeachment on April 8 until the end of his tenure.

In response, the state government challenged the judgment and filed a stay of execution.
