The Edo State Government has completed the recruitment of 5,500 teachers to enhance teaching and learning in the state’s basic schools.

Mrs. Ozavize Salami, Chair of the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), announced this during a press conference on Friday in Benin.

Salami explained that the recruitment is part of the government’s strategy to address teacher shortages in primary and junior secondary schools across the state.

The process was rigorous, with 19,931 applications received and 16,038 candidates selected for computer-based tests and interviews.

“Candidates with relevant skills and expertise were chosen to fill gaps across all local government areas,” Salami said.

added that the newly recruited teachers would undergo training to ensure they are well-equipped to deliver high-quality education.

This initiative aligns with Governor Obaseki’s education reform program, EdoBEST, which focuses on improving learning outcomes for approximately 400,000 children in the state. Salami described the recruitment of 5,500 teachers as a significant step towards achieving these educational goals.

Additionally, 1,780 EdoSTAR fellows, who were engaged as trainee teachers two years ago, have been recruited as full-time government teachers.

Salami emphasized that this exercise demonstrates the state government’s commitment to investing in its teachers and providing opportunities for their growth and development.

The newly recruited teachers have been deployed to schools across the state to ensure that every child has access to quality education. Salami expressed confidence that this recruitment will positively impact teaching and learning in Edo’s primary schools.
