The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, handed over N1,234,350,000 to the Enugu State government, marking a major recovery in its ongoing campaign against corruption and economic crimes.

The funds were retrieved from Sujimoto Luxury Construction Limited over alleged breach of contract in the construction of 22 smart schools across the state.

The recovery follows a petition received by the EFCC on February 11, 2025, which accused the construction firm of failing to fulfill its contractual obligations despite receiving N2,289,186,190 as an advance payment for the project.

The petitioner identified Dr. Olasijibomi Ogundele, the Group Managing Director of Sujimoto Luxury Construction Limited, alleging that the contractor intentionally defaulted on the project and diverted funds for unrelated purposes.

The petition also stated that the contract’s completion deadline lapsed on January 2, 2025, without any significant progress.

In response, operatives from the EFCC’s Special Task Fraud Section in Enugu initiated investigations and successfully recovered N1.234 billion for the state government.

At the handover ceremony, Commander Daniel Isei, Zonal Director of EFCC’s Enugu Directorate, represented EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede, reiterating the Commission’s determination to recover public funds and prosecute offenders.

He stressed that the EFCC would continue to act against any party involved in economic crimes, warning contractors to adhere strictly to the Public Procurement Act and maintain transparency in the handling of public funds.

“The EFCC will ensure that every act contrary to the law is dealt with, and where possible, restitution is made to the victim,” Isei said. He added that the Commission would thoroughly examine all aspects of the Sujimoto case to ensure every unaccounted kobo is recovered.

He further warned that where criminality is proven, prosecution would follow, stressing that proper due diligence and adherence to procurement procedures would help prevent such cases.

Receiving the recovered funds on behalf of Enugu State, Onyia praised the EFCC for its professionalism and dedication. He noted that despite public distractions at the time of the petition, the Commission maintained focus, followed the money trail, and conducted thorough investigations.

“This is a remarkable testimony of intergovernmental collaboration and transparency,” Onyia said, thanking the EFCC for its support.
