At the 21st Gani Fawehinmi Memorial Lecture organized by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ikeja branch, former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor and Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi, launched a scathing critique of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing it of mismanaging the economy.

Sanusi’s remarks come as Nigerians grapple with worsening inflation and deepening poverty.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) recently reported that headline inflation has surged to nearly 35%, exacerbating economic challenges for citizens who have faced months of hardship.

Speaking on the theme, “Bretton Woods and the African Economies: Can Nigerians Survive Another Structural Adjustment Programme?” Sanusi expressed frustration over the government’s handling of the economy.

“Is everything being done correctly? No. When I’m ready to discuss the economy, I will,” Sanusi said. “I can provide insights into the challenges we face, how they were predictable, and even avoidable. But I won’t. I’ve chosen not to comment on the economy, reforms, or anything that could benefit this government. They are my friends, but if they don’t act like friends, I won’t act like one either.”

Sanusi criticized the lack of competent communication from government spokespersons, stating, “They don’t even have people with the pedigree to articulate their policies to the public. Let them explain to Nigerians why they are implementing these measures.”

He attributed Nigeria’s current economic struggles to years of poor management, remarking, “What we’re experiencing today is, at least in part, the result of decades of irresponsible management. People warned about the consequences of our actions, but those in power ignored them.”

Sanusi also urged lawyers to emulate the integrity and virtues of the late Gani Fawehinmi, a renowned human rights activist and legal icon. He lamented the decline in ethical standards within the legal profession, calling Fawehinmi a symbol of moral excellence and good character.

Aviation and Aerospace Development Minister Festus Keyamo SAN, represented by Henry Agbebire, a director at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), praised Fawehinmi’s legacy during his goodwill message.

“The late Chief Gani Fawehinmi left an indelible mark on human rights advocacy, public service, and the legal profession. His legacy inspires us all with its courage, resilience, and unwavering commitment to justice for the common man,” Keyamo stated.

Reflecting on his own journey, Keyamo acknowledged Fawehinmi’s mentorship as pivotal in shaping his career and activism. “Issues championed by Fawehinmi—citizens’ rights, accountable governance, and equitable public policy—continue to guide my work today,” he added.

Keyamo commended the lecture for spotlighting Nigeria’s pressing economic concerns and expressed optimism that the discussions would generate actionable ideas for sustainable development and social justice.

Other dignitaries at the event included Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President Afam Osigwe SAN, Lagos Attorney General and Justice Commissioner Lawal Pedro SAN, and human rights lawyer Femi Falana SAN.

Sanusi’s remarks underscore the growing frustration among opinion leaders over the government’s economic policies. The rising cost of living, worsened by inflation and economic mismanagement, continues to push more Nigerians into poverty.

With Sanusi refusing to offer advice to the administration, the lack of constructive engagement between key experts and the government could further complicate efforts to address the nation’s challenges.
