A devastating fire engulfed an 18-seater bus at the G-hostel junction in Abakiliki, Ebonyi State, on Saturday, leaving all passengers with severe burns that made identification nearly impossible.
Eyewitnesses described a horrific scene as flames consumed the vehicle shortly after the blaze erupted, causing panic among onlookers.
Initial investigations revealed that the bus driver had converted the vehicle’s fuel system from petrol to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).
This incident marks the second reported explosion involving a CNG-powered vehicle within weeks, following a similar explosion in Edo State.
Experts are raising alarms over the safety of such conversions, particularly if not conducted at certified facilities.

“CNG conversions should always be performed by professionals in approved centers to ensure safety protocols are followed,” warned Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwu, a fuel systems specialist. “Improper installations can lead to catastrophic failures, including explosions.”
While the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, local authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution when converting vehicles to alternative fuel sources. “The use of CNG is generally safe when done correctly, but we need to ensure that everyone is aware of the potential risks,” added Dr. Chukwu.
It remains unclear whether this conversion was executed at a designated conversion center, which could significantly impact the ongoing investigation. Local residents and officials are calling for stricter regulations on CNG conversions to prevent future tragedies.
As authorities continue to probe the incident, the community mourns the loss of lives and grapples with the unsettling reality of transportation safety in the region.
