The Federal Government has earmarked N300 billion to improve electricity supply in teaching hospitals and universities across Nigeria, in a move aimed at tackling persistent power shortages in critical sectors.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by Abubakar Bichi, Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation and member representing Bichi Federal Constituency, during the unveiling of a solar hybrid intervention project at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital in Kano.

Bichi, speaking at the event, said the initiative is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s drive to provide reliable energy for key national institutions.

“This allocation will fund the installation of renewable energy systems, with priority given to institutions that deliver essential services to Nigerians,” he explained.

He added that the project reflects government’s determination to end the recurring power outages that continue to disrupt healthcare delivery and tertiary education nationwide.

The solar hybrid intervention at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital is one of several pilot projects expected to be replicated across the country under the funding plan.

Energy experts say the N300bn intervention could significantly reduce reliance on diesel-powered generators in hospitals and universities, cut costs, and promote cleaner, more sustainable energy use.

Stakeholders in the health and education sectors have welcomed the initiative, noting that uninterrupted electricity supply will enhance medical services, research, and learning environments in public institutions.
