FIFA ranks Super Eagles ahead of Egypt, Cameroon

The world football governing body, FIFA has released its latest ranking in which the Super Eagles of Nigeria have been ranked ahead of Africa Cup of Nations finalist, Egypt and tournament hosts, Cameroon.

Despite Nigeria’s early exit from the just concluded Afcon tournament, the Eagles have moved up three places in the latest FIFA rankings released on Thursday.

The Super Eagles are now ranked 33rd in the world and third, in Africa better than the 36th and fifth on the continent rankings they enjoyed before the Afcon.

Newly crowned champions Senegal not only retained their position as the highest-ranked African country but also moved from 20th to 18th in the global ranking.

This is the highest rank ever for the Teranga Lions who are still celebrating their maiden Afcon success where they beat Egypt in penalty shootouts.

Morocco are Africa’s second-highest ranked team and they are occupying the 24th spot globally.

The Atlas Lions were stopped in the quarter-final of Afcon 2021 by Northern African rivals; Egypt.

 

Egypt, Tunisia Cameroon, Algeria, Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso complete the roster of Africa’s top 10 teams.

Meanwhile, the world’s top three teams remain unchanged with Belgium leading the pack ahead of Brazil and France.

The next FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking will be published on 31 March 2022.
