Manager Hansi Flick has taken responsibility for FC Barcelona’s 2–1 defeat to Girona FC in Monday’s La Liga clash, conceding that his side failed to meet the required standard, particularly in defensive transitions.
Barcelona were undone at the Estadi Montilivi despite a goal from young defender Pau Cubarsí, as Girona capitalised on defensive lapses to secure all three points in front of their home supporters.
Speaking in his post-match press conference, Flick did not mince words in assessing his team’s performance, highlighting positional errors and a lack of control as decisive factors.
“We defended very poorly, especially in transition. We weren’t well-positioned and struggled to withstand Girona’s attacks,” Flick said.
The German tactician admitted that although Barcelona created chances in the first half, they lacked the cutting edge and intensity required to convert opportunities into a commanding advantage.
“We needed more control and fewer mistakes. In the first half, we had more chances, but we have to show the hunger to win these matches,” he added.

Flick also dismissed the idea of making excuses, insisting that improvement is non-negotiable if the Blaugrana are to remain competitive in the title race.
“We did not play well and I don’t want excuses, but we have to play better.”
The defeat leaves Barcelona two points behind leaders Real Madrid CF in the La Liga standings, intensifying pressure as the season enters a crucial stretch.
Girona’s victory further underlines their growing reputation as a formidable side capable of troubling Spain’s traditional heavyweights, particularly with their quick transitions and aggressive pressing.
Barcelona will look to bounce back when they face Levante UD this weekend. With the margin at the top narrowing, Flick’s side must respond swiftly to avoid losing further ground in what is shaping up to be a tightly contested title race.
For now, the Barcelona manager has made it clear: defensive discipline and sharper execution will be essential if his team is to rediscover winning form.
