Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, was on Monday night arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) shortly after he was granted bail by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), according to a report by Premium Times.
El-Rufai, who had honoured the EFCC’s invitation earlier in the day over alleged corruption linked to his administration, was granted bail at about 8 p.m.
However, sources cited in the report said DSS operatives, who had reportedly laid in wait at the EFCC headquarters, immediately took him into custody upon his release.
The fresh arrest is said to be connected to allegations that the former governor unlawfully intercepted the phone communications of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu.
El-Rufai, a prominent chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), had earlier arrived at the EFCC headquarters accompanied by hundreds of supporters, signaling the political weight surrounding the investigation.

The latest development follows a dramatic episode last Thursday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, where the former governor reportedly narrowly escaped arrest.
In the aftermath of the airport incident, El-Rufai publicly accused NSA Nuhu Ribadu of orchestrating the attempted arrest, making the allegation during a series of media interviews.
As of press time, neither the DSS nor the EFCC had issued an official statement detailing the circumstances surrounding the arrest or the specific allegations tied to the reported phone interception.
The unfolding situation marks a significant escalation in the legal and political challenges facing the former governor, with observers closely watching for further developments.
