In a pivotal development in Rivers State’s ongoing political crisis, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has formally acknowledged the Supreme Court’s judgment affirming Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule and 26 others as legitimate members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The ruling, which has intensified political discourse in the state, comes amid months of legal battles and institutional disputes.

A statement released by the Rivers State Commissioner for Information, Joe Johnson, confirmed the governor’s recognition of the apex court’s decision while emphasizing that the state government is carefully assessing its broader implications.

A key area of concern includes the administration of state funds and local government affairs, both of which are directly impacted by legislative oversight.

“At this time, we are awaiting a detailed briefing on the implications of the judgment. We will carefully evaluate the situation and determine the next steps to take in the best interest of Rivers State and its people,” the statement read.

Despite accepting the Supreme Court’s verdict, Governor Fubara pointed out that the crux of the lawmakers’ disputed status—their defection from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC)—remains unresolved.

He clarified that since the defection issue was not presented before the Supreme Court, it was not adjudicated upon, and the matter is still pending before the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt.

“Since the issue of defection wasn’t on the table before the learned Justices, in their eyes, Amaewhule and the 26 others are still operating as lawmakers until that matter comes before them,” the statement explained.

Governor Fubara reassured the people of Rivers State that his administration remains committed to upholding the rule of law and prioritizing the welfare of its citizens.

He urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding as the government continues to navigate the legal complexities surrounding the ruling.

Political analysts believe the governor’s measured response indicates a strategic approach to managing the delicate balance of power in the state.

With the legal status of the lawmakers still under scrutiny, the next steps taken by the state government could significantly influence the political landscape in Rivers State.

As the situation unfolds, all eyes remain on the Federal High Court proceedings and the governor’s next course of action, which will likely determine the future of legislative authority and governance in Rivers State.
