Africa will be represented by a record 10 teams at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following Democratic Republic of the Congo’s qualification in the intercontinental playoff, securing an additional slot for the continent.

DR Congo booked their place with a 1–0 extra-time victory over Jamaica on Tuesday, completing Africa’s lineup for the expanded 48-team tournament. FIFA’s expansion increased Africa’s allocation from five to nine direct slots, with DR Congo claiming one of the intercontinental playoff spots.

Among the qualifiers, Cape Verde will make a historic debut. With a population of about 525,000, the island nation is now one of the smallest countries ever to play at a World Cup. Meanwhile, Morocco and Tunisia remain the most experienced African nations, each marking their seventh appearance.
