Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has opened up on his title-deciding slip against Chelsea in 2014, saying it was “pure bad luck”.
Approaching half-time at Anfield on April 27, 2014, Liverpool were level with Chelsea knowing a win would take them five points clear at the top of the Premier League with just two games to go in the season.
However, a Gerrard slip just inside his own half allowed Demba Ba through on goal to open the scoring, he went on to double his tally as Chelsea won the game 2-0 – ending Liverpool’s title hopes.
Gerrard was struggling with a back problem at the time and needed to get an epidural injection to manage the pain.
Speaking to the Daily Mail about his forthcoming biopic, Gerrard said: “Don’t think that is an excuse.
“What happened was just pure bad luck but, when you do a book or film, especially with people who have won Oscars and made films such as Amy (the biopic of the late Amy Winehouse) and Senna, you must be as honest and open as you can.”
