The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of nine worshippers by suspected armed assailants during a night vigil at St. John’s Catholic Church in Ojije community, Utonkon, Ado Local Government Area of the state.
The incident was disclosed on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Edet Udeme, during an interview with journalists.
According to her, the worshippers were observing a night vigil when gunmen reportedly invaded the church premises and forcefully took nine persons to an undisclosed location.
DSP Udeme said the attack triggered an immediate security response, with the Commissioner of Police ordering the deployment of tactical and operational units to the affected area.

She explained that the move is aimed at intensifying search-and-rescue operations and tracking down the perpetrators.
“The Commissioner of Police has directed the immediate deployment of tactical teams to the area to ensure that the victims are rescued unhurt and those behind the attack are brought to justice,” the PPRO said.
She further assured residents of Ojije community and the wider Ado Local Government Area that the police command remains committed to the protection of lives and property across the state. According to her, security presence has been strengthened in vulnerable and high-risk areas to prevent further attacks and reassure the public.
DSP Udeme added that investigations are ongoing, while efforts to rescue the abducted worshippers and apprehend the suspects have been intensified.
She urged members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could aid the operation.
The latest abduction adds to growing concerns over insecurity in parts of Benue State, particularly attacks on rural communities and places of worship, prompting renewed calls for enhanced security measures and community vigilance.
