INEC Extends The Deadline for Party Register, Submission Ahead of 2027 Elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revised the timetable for the 2027 General Election, extending the deadline for political parties to submit their registers of members.
Why INEC Adjusted the 2027 Election Timetable
The decision followed a meeting between INEC and political party leaders on Tuesday, where concerns were raised about the initial submission timeline. According to INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the revised schedule aligns more closely with the 21‑day requirement stipulated in Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act, 2026.

Haruna noted that the adjustment also accommodates the dates political parties have fixed for their primaries.

With the new changes, the deadline for submitting party registers has been shifted from April 21 to May 10, 2026.
Updated Timeline for Party Primaries
Under the new guidelines:
- Political parties may conduct their primaries between April 23 and May 30, 2026.
- Each party must submit its membership register at least 21 days before its chosen primary date.
This means parties now have greater flexibility in planning their internal processes while still meeting legal requirements.
INEC Warns Parties to Adhere to New Dates
INEC emphasised that strict compliance with the updated timeline is essential to avoid administrative delays ahead of the 2027 general elections. Haruna described the changes as necessary to ensure a “smooth electoral process” and urged parties to plan accordingly.
As INEC extends the deadline, it is also seen as part of its broader effort to strengthen internal party democracy and improve the credibility of the electoral process. By giving political parties more time to update and authenticate their registers, the Commission aims to reduce disputes over membership eligibility during primaries. Analysts note that the timely submission of accurate registers is crucial for transparent delegate selection and candidate nomination. The extension is therefore expected to minimise conflicts and enhance compliance with legal provisions. INEC reiterated that it will continue to engage political parties to ensure full readiness ahead of the 2027 general elections.
