The spotlight is on Nigeria’s automotive industry as Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing (IVM), Mikano Motors, and GAC Motors vie for the prestigious Car Assembly Plant of the Year title at the prestigious Nigeria Auto Journalists Association (NAJA) awards.
This award will be the centerpiece of the Nigeria Auto Journalists Association (NAJA) Awards, scheduled for December 11, 2024, at Oriental Hotels, Victoria Island, Lagos.
The NAJA Awards, a hallmark of Nigeria’s automotive calendar, recognizes excellence in vehicle assembly, innovation, and contributions to the nation’s evolving automotive ecosystem.
Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing (IVM), Nigeria’s first indigenous automaker, is a strong contender. The company has positioned itself as a leader in producing vehicles tailored to local needs, emphasizing affordability and durability.
With efforts to deepen local content in its manufacturing processes, Innoson has significantly reduced reliance on imports, creating jobs and contributing to Nigeria’s industrial growth.
In contrast, Mikano Motors brings luxury and cutting-edge technology to the competition. Known for its sleek designs and advanced features, Mikano has successfully appealed to Nigeria’s growing middle class.

Leveraging its extensive infrastructure from its power generation business, Mikano has solidified its place as a luxury and utility vehicle assembler.
GAC Motors, the third contender, has built a reputation for innovation and energy efficiency. Its robust after-sales service and aggressive marketing strategies have made GAC a household name in the Nigerian market.
The competition reflects the ongoing transformation of Nigeria’s automotive sector, driven by policies such as the National Automotive Industry Development Plan (NAIDP). These policies incentivize local assembly by imposing high tariffs on fully built imported vehicles, fostering domestic production.
“The race for this award underscores the dynamic nature of Nigeria’s automotive landscape,” said Theodore Opara, Chairman of the 2024 NAJA Awards planning committee. “The winner must combine innovation, affordability, and alignment with Nigeria’s socio-economic realities.”
