The International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria has announced with deep sorrow the passing of its treasurer and veteran journalist, Hajiya Rafatu Salami.
The news was conveyed in a statement released on Friday in Abuja, signed by the IPI Secretary, Mallam Ahmed I. Shekarau.
Rafatu Salami, an accomplished journalist and Assistant Director of Digital Media at the Voice of Nigeria (VON), was celebrated for her profound contributions to journalism and her unwavering dedication to press freedom.
The statement highlighted her impactful career and compassionate nature, describing her as a journalist who left an indelible mark on her profession.
“Rafatu was a compassionate woman who was always ready to give a helping hand to her colleagues with her wealth of experience gained over the years,” the statement read.
A committed unionist, Salami served as the Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, from 2015 to 2018. Her leadership was characterized by active involvement in promoting press freedom and fostering responsible journalism in Nigeria.

Mallam Ahmed Shekarau noted the profound loss her demise represents, stating, “Rafatu died when her services were most needed by IPI Nigeria and the nation, having stamped her foot in the sands of time. She would be greatly missed by her colleagues, family, and admirers.”
Tributes have continued to flow from colleagues and admirers who recognized her dedication, integrity, and selflessness.
“Hajiya Rafatu Salami’s remarkable legacy, marked by her dedication to journalism, unwavering integrity, selflessness, and compassion for humanity, will be greatly missed,” said Musikilu Mojeed, President of IPI Nigeria.
Kadaria Ahmed, founder of Radio Now and IPI Nigeria Board of Trustees member, expressed her grief, stating, “Very sad! May Allah have mercy on her and give her family the fortitude to deal with the loss. Amin summa Amin.”
Malam Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to former President Muhammadu Buhari, recalled Salami’s selfless acts, including her leadership in a successful fundraising campaign for a colleague’s medical treatment. “Allah knows best. May He grant her family the strength to bear the loss,” Shehu added.
Hajiya Rafatu Salami, who was married with children, will be laid to rest at the Gudu Cemetery in Abuja’s Apo District following a funeral prayer at the Abuja National Mosque.
Her passing has left a void in Nigeria’s journalism community. As tributes continue to pour in, her colleagues and admirers honor her legacy, reflecting on her contributions to the profession and the lives she touched.
