Kwankwaso Resigns from NNPP, Cites ‘Strategic Realignment’
Former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has resigned from the party with immediate effect, citing the need for “strategic realignment” amid Nigeria’s shifting political landscape.
Kwankwaso, who served as the NNPP’s National Leader and its presidential flagbearer in the last general election, announced his departure in a statement on Saturday. He described the decision as a difficult but necessary step.
“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” he said, noting that leaving a party he helped build was not an easy choice.

Says Political Climate Requires New Alignment
Explaining the rationale behind his exit, Kwankwaso said the evolving political environment demands a reassessment of alliances and platforms.
“Considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to change the nation effectively,” he stated.
His resignation comes amid ongoing internal tensions within the NNPP and speculation about possible new coalitions ahead of the next election cycle.
