The Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Public Accounts (Local) has commenced a comprehensive review and consideration of the Year 2023 audit reports on Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas in the state.
The Committee is going to spend two weeks scrutinising the 2023 Statutory Audit Reports, submitted by the Auditor-General for Local Governments, covering the financial activities and accounts of the 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) across Lagos State.
The exercise, which underscores the Assembly’s commitment to strengthening grassroots governance and promoting prudent management of public resources, began with the scrutiny of Ifelodun LCDA, Ojo Local Government, Epe Local Government, Ikoyi/Obalende LCDA, Agboyi-Ketu LCDA, among others.
The review sessions are scheduled to continue until Wednesday, 18th February, 2026.
Speaking at the opening session, the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Nureni Akinsanya, reminded invited Chairmen and key officials of the councils that the Committee on Public Accounts (Local) remains a statutory oversight body of the Lagos State House of Assembly, empowered to examine audit reports and ensure probity, transparency, fiscal discipline, and accountability in the administration of public funds at the local council level.
Hon. Akinsanya referenced Section 50(2) of the Local Government Administration Law, 2024 and Rule No. 116 of the Rules and Standing Orders of the House, which empower the House committee to review the Auditor-General’s reports and ensure probity, transparency, and accountability in the management of public funds at the local council level.
He emphasised that all Council Chairmen are expected to provide comprehensive responses to issues raised in the statutory audit reports and to present all relevant documents required by the Committee to facilitate a thorough and transparent review process.
The Chairman reassured stakeholders and members of the public that the exercise is not intended as a witch-hunt, but rather as a constitutional responsibility aimed at strengthening good governance, improving service delivery at the grassroots, and safeguarding public resources for the benefit of all residents of Lagos State.
According to him, “the Committee’s deliberations will be guided by the principles of value for money, due process, and responsible stewardship of public funds, ensuring that every naira allocated for community development directly benefits our constituents.”
He further noted that, at the conclusion of the review, the Committee will compile its findings and recommendations for presentation before the Honourable Members of the House during plenary session for further legislative consideration and necessary action in the interest of accountability and public confidence.
Other members of the Committee present at the sessions include Hon. Princess Omolara Lawal- Olumegbon, Hon. Engr. Adebola Shabi, Hon. Tijani Surajudeen, Hon. Ganiyu Sanni, Hon. Olusegun Ege, Hon. Abdul-Kareem Jubreel, and Hon. Obafemi Saheed.
The Lagos State House of Assembly remains steadfast in its resolve to promote transparent governance, strengthen institutional accountability, and ensure that local councils deliver quality services that positively impact the daily lives of citizens.
