The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has been impeached.

In an immediate move, Mojisola Meranda, representing Apapa State Constituency I, was elected as Obasa’s successor.

Additionally, Hon. Fatai Mojeed, the Deputy Chief Whip, has been elected as the new Deputy Speaker.

The impeachment follows a series of controversies surrounding Obasa, particularly his recent comments regarding the 2027 Lagos State governorship election.

In November 2024, during the presentation of the 2025 state budget by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Obasa sparked debate when he asserted that he was neither too young nor inexperienced to run for governor.

He controversially stated that “those who have been before me are not better off,” and emphasized that his goal was to build the party platform, Mandate, despite claims from detractors that he harbored selfish aspirations for the governorship.

Obasa further clarified that becoming governor was not his primary focus, but maintained that he was not ruled out from the position due to age or lack of experience.

His comments, however, led to mounting political tension.

Obasa was also accused of mismanaging public funds, including a controversial N17 billion expenditure on a gate to the Assembly complex.

Additionally, there were allegations of improper handling of constituency funds and projects, further eroding his support within the Assembly.

Obasa’s impeachment marks a dramatic shift in the Lagos State political landscape as Meranda takes over the role of Speaker amidst growing scrutiny of his leadership.
