The Lagos State House of Assembly has tasked Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to mandate the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission LASIEC to conduct bye-elections to fill vacant councillorship positions in some councils within the state.
The said vacant seats were that of some deceased councilors who passed on after being sworn into Office in the Local Government and Local Government Development areas.
The affected wards in need of a representative are in Mushin, Somolu, and Ibeju-Lekki Local Government.
Hon. Nureni Akinsanya raised the issue during plenary under matter of Urgent Public Importance, he urged the House to formally request that the Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to direct the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) to conduct bye-elections in the affected Local Governments and Local Council Development areas.
Worried about the vacuums created by the demise of the said councillors, Akinsanya opined that the wards affected have been deprived of adequate representation and the attendant opportunities within their respective Local Governments and LCDAs.
In his ruling, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, directed the Clerk of the House, Barr. Olalekan Onafeko, to formally write to the Governor, requesting him to direct Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission LASIEC to make the necessary arrangements and provisions for the conduct of the bye-elections in the affected LG/LCDAs.
Subsequently, the lawmakers also mourn with the people of Badagry, over the passing of the Permanent Vice Chairman of Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs, Aholu Babatunde Akran who was Wheno-Aholu Toyi 1, a position he held till his Demise at age 89.
The Speaker thereafter directed the Clerk to write a condolence letter to the people of Badagry to sympathise with them.
