The Lagos State Government has expressed shock over the collapse of a bungalow classroom block at Odokekere High School, Ikorodu.

In a statement issued by the Special Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools (SCRPS), the state government described the incident as unfortunate but clarified that no lives were lost and no students were injured in the collapse.

According to the SCRPS, preliminary and classified records from its office indicate that the affected classroom block had already been identified as structurally weak and was officially marked for demolition.

The building was slated to be pulled down to make way for the construction of a more suitable and modern classroom facility capable of accommodating the school’s growing student population.

The committee reassured parents and the general public that all students of Odokekere High School are safe and in stable condition, stressing that there were no casualties recorded from the incident.

Following the development, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has directed the immediate relocation of affected students to nearby schools to ensure that teaching and learning activities continue without disruption.

The statement further disclosed that officials of the SCRPS are scheduled to visit the school today to carry out an on-the-spot assessment of the collapsed structure.

The assessment, according to the committee, will guide the government in finalising modalities for the immediate commencement of construction of an ultra-modern classroom block designed to meet current standards and cater for the school’s large student population.

The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to the safety of students and staff across public schools and pledged to accelerate ongoing rehabilitation efforts to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The statement was signed by the Management of the Special Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools (SCRPS).
